Dr Manjula O’Connor

We have been working closely with consultant psychiatrist Dr Manjula O’Connor over the last two years to provide family law legal services to women who have been the victims of domestic violence and are now suffering psychiatric illness as a result.

The majority of cases we have worked on with Dr O’Connor relate to women who have been physically, financially and emotionally abused. Victoria Legal Aid funding therefore provides them an opportunity to secure some justice for the abuse they have suffered. Dr O’Connor has a special interest in Domestic and Family Violence, Gender related issues in Psychiatric illness, Anxiety and Depressive illness. She is also the chair of the AISV Taskforce domestic violence in Indian and Ethnic communities.

RRR Lawyers is on the Legal Aid panel for family law and intervention matters, and we have been able to obtain grants for legal aid to make appropriate applications with the court for maintenance, property distribution, and issues relating to parenting issues and the care of children.

The majority of cases involve the parents of both parties, as well as issues in regards to the payment of dowry in India, with a substantial amount of funds invested by the wife’s parents in regards to gold jewellery which the husband will often retain after separation until court intervention.

The funding through Victoria Legal Aid is quite limited and our firm has made a decision that this is one way in which RRR Lawyers are able to put back into the community.
